On Saturday, 18th August, 2018, the English Department of PSN had organized a Slam poetry workshop for students of Grade 8. Three renowned slam poets from the Delhi slam poetry society, namely Shibani Das, Aastha Singh and Ishaan Chawdhary worked closely by engaging students in hands on activities of writing and performing slam poetry.
Following are some of the thoughts about the workshop shared by the students -
Iha Jha (Grade 8A):
This workshop was a unique experience for all of us who attended it, as we were provided with a firsthand take on the process and creative journey that one undergoes when coming up with a slam poem straight from the heart, especially from three interactive professionals, who were by far the best hosts in any of the workshops we've attended in middle school. Their open and easy going nature with everyone allowed us to express our innovative and wacky ways of writing a heartfelt piece of spoken-word poetry, with touches of our personal experiences, emotions, and abstract wording incorporated in a natural manner, creating a beautiful blend of performance, passion, and content.
Needless to mention that the tips, tricks, and hacks they shared with all of us aided us immensely in the aspects of confidence, voice modulation, and phrasing. It was also their individual attention to each and every of us which really pushed us to be honest and feel proud of our work, regardless of how well written or performed.
I thoroughly enjoyed this experience, and look forward to more workshops like this one in the future!
Nitsia Bharti (Grade 8 A):
Today was the day I was looking for ! To be honest the only reason I came to school today was because of the Slam Poetry workshop. And I'm glad I came because the workshop was full of fun and learning. We interacted with a few activities that brought our group closer. We were taught the important factors that put slam poetry together. We had pairs and wrote poems together. My favorite part of the workshop would have to be presenting and performing our poems and guess what me and my pair placed second place. I really enjoyed performing and listening to other people's performances because there were a few points which I could really deeply connect with. I really enjoyed this workshop and think that Aastha, Ishaan and Shibani did a tremendous job!
Jiwook Noh (8 B):
By my honest review, personally I somewhat enjoyed the whole process, because I totally understood the basic knowledge of slam poetry. Before this, I actually was really worried about the future when we have to write a slam poem by our own for the English summative, and I thought 'Nothing" will come out from my brain and eventually I would have failed it. But this workshop really helped me out, especially when I heard some of just simple poems made by our classmates and some wonderful examples had come out from them.
Aanya Sharma (8 B):
The slam poetry workshop was a very fun and educational experience. There was a really comfortable, laid back environment allowing us to learn and grow. I understood various aspects of slam poetry, mainly the performing part. We were taught the proper posture, way to speak, as well as what to do if you mess up in the middle of your poem.
Anaya Chhabra (8 B):
Today's workshop on slam poetry, was by three well known slam poets, Shibani Das, Aastha Singh and Ishaan Chawdhary. Before the workshop started, I was extremely anxious, as poetry is my greatest passion, and having such an opportunity shouldn't be missed. When we first saw them, they seemed laid back and relatable, which is why we got comfortable with them in hardly any time. They were so cheerful and full of life, it was like when they talked about poetry, the felt it. It was actually very inspiring considering that they were all college going students, who were doing so well for themselves, by pursuing their passions, as well as creativity. The first thing that we did was we were in pairs, and we had to write a poem about absolutely anything. Then we had to discuss it with our pairs and write a poem in response to our pairs. We then watched a ppt, which told us more about slam poetry. They told us about different techniques, like how to memorize a poem, about using voice modulation, pace, eye contact and more. We then had to write a slam poem, which we then presented in front of everyone else. We had a slam competition and it gave all of us a platform to express ourselves. The workshop was cherished by most of us.
