Our school's approach to design thinking includes the principles of accessible and universal design. This ensures that all solutions are accessible to everyone, regardless of cultural background or abilities. By embracing these principles, we are committed to creating an inclusive environment that values diversity and promotes equity. Design thinking is a powerful tool that promotes intercultural understanding, diversity, equity, and inclusion. Its focus on empathy, collaboration, inclusive problem-solving, and iterative design makes it an effective approach to creating a more equitable and inclusive society.
Students of MYP Year 1 and Year 2 work together on their passions for Genius Hour Projects. They follow the design thinking cycle in which they empathize with a community to identify a problem, sought solutions and put these solutions to test. Students are engaged in a diverse range of projects which are in accordance with Sustainable Development Goals. The holistic learning experiences facilitated skill development and fostered a global perspective among students.
Students work in teams as per their passions to come up with solutions to the problems they had identified. During the project they also learn questioning techniques and develop team skills involving making group agreements, learning to collaborate and solving their differences. Each group signs a group contract in which expectations, roles and responsibilities of each member of the group is agreed upon. The sense of community is enhanced when they get to know and work with each other. Students also participate in a research workshop which helps them conduct authentic research. Post research, they meet experts to build on their ideas and create their products/solutions to test them. It is an iterative process and students take continuous feedback from their mentors and experts to improvise and strengthen their solutions. Continuous reflection develops critical thinking skills and enhanced innovation and motivation to pave way for the future.
The learning is celebrated through an exhibition where they showcase their research and findings with great zeal. They share the challenges and struggles they face during the project and how they resolve them. They also talk about their failures, how they learn from those mistakes, and take their learning forward in a positive manner. Through this project, students understand the value of empathy and work towards the betterment of society. They develop lifelong learning so that they can continue the project later and implement design thinking in every aspect of their lives.
