After weeks of inquiring, reflecting and practicing for our grand event the Celebration of Learning aptly titled “MOSAIC” was a vibrant showcase of the inquiry on the unit ‘Communities’. Our second graders shared their research of the various communities that were inquired into, through their individual exploration on their dream communities, via fact files, models, and reflections.
Opening the event, the second graders took to the stage and mesmerized the audience with their spectacular performances! Based on the theme of Mosaic, each performance was centered around forming something beautiful together as a community. The learners presented a traditional children’s song in Yorta Yorta, the language of the Aboriginal tribe, through acapella singing and percussion. A dance variety representing the cultures of the world was showcased as the students performed Bihu, Dandiya, Maypole and Flamenco dances. They also presented a drama based on the ancient tale ‘The Stone Soup’ – a story of creatively mixing different and unexpected ingredients together to create something new and wonderful. The choir presented the world-famous song "Imagine" by the legendary musician John Lennon, the lyrics of which encourage us all to imagine a world of peace without anything separating communities.
The highlight of the event was the classroom exhibition that our learners presented to their parents, teachers and leaders. The young minds articulated their thoughts effectively of what their “Dream Community” would look like. They played a part in showcasing the traditions, art, dance, music and other aspects of their “Dream Community”. Seeing learners taking ownership of their learning and expressing their ideas confidently was heart-warming.
The dedicated and confident second graders literally stole the show with their enthusiasm and consistent hard work, truly showcasing a dream community!
