STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) is now a recognized 21st century skill and vital in the overall development of students. It is always a good idea to start young and so, we at Pathways Noida conceptualized a fun and engaging day where we witnessed a volley of essential learning amongst students and adults alike. Primary wing of Pathways School, Noida celebrated 'Science and Tech Day' on the 4th of December. The day culminated with a show displaying the working models of the challenges that different groups had worked on and sharing of the learning process.
Each grade was given two challenges to choose from, which were chosen keeping in mind their age and expertise levels as well as their upcoming units or prior knowledge gained in some of the previous inquiries in class. The challenges were :-
• Grade 2
- Creating a catapult which can shoot up to a distance of 4 metres.
- Creating a Lego car which can run up to 5 metres.
• Grade 3
- Creating a battery-operated motor car which runs at least 5 metres.
- Creating a bridge made of toothpicks which can withstand a load.
• Grade 4
- Launching a rocket which can go up to a height of at least 15 feet
- Designing a vertical marble run which can run a marble from a height of 4 feet down in 6 seconds.
• Grade 5
- Creating a paper circuit which lights up a number of LED lights
- Rube Goldberg Machine (Complete any mundane task in a complicated way)
The day started with lots of anticipatory thrill within the teams while they were getting ready to present their projects which were based on a wide spectrum of scientific principles like rocket science, circuitry, construction and laws of motion. Each team had a parent or teacher mentor who were equally involved in the planning and execution of their respective projects through the week. All grades from 2 to 5 were divided across the Cassia building and each corner was abuzz with numerous levels of excitement mixed with some disappointments as well as victories. The teams were seen testing and evaluating their projects to check if they will run smoothly during the final presentation. Last minute calculations and corrections added value to the reflective side of our students which is inherently a part of everyone's learning journey at Pathways Noida. All adults were as engrossed as the students in their tasks.
While the upper primary students were busy setting up their projects for the showcase, the corridors of Kindergarten and Grade 1 were strewn across by some fascinating stations for our little scientists and explorers. The parents of KG and 1 had volunteered to setup working experiments like mini volcanic eruptions using vinegar and baking soda, secret messaging through lemon juice and conjuring a bowlful of dense white smoke. These engagements resulted in awe and wonderment amongst the students and many of them were seen asking relevant questions related to the underlying scientific principle behind the experiments.
All teams and volunteers were exhilarated with the learnings and went back happy with their effort.
