Grade 5 students had an exciting opportunity for a virtual tour of the Gwacheon National Science Museum in South Korea on Friday, 20th August 2021.
The Gwacheon National Science Museum is the principal place of interest in South Korea as a complex center of science and technology. It was opened on November 14, 2008. Considering the scale, it is regarded as one of the biggest and most well-equipped science museums in the world with over 2,400 exhibits (https://artsandculture.google.com/partner/gwacheon-national-science-museum).
Mr. Hur showed children the various ways in which South Korea is making use of renewable resources such as wind, solar energy, and water to generate electricity. Children also understood that, when used in a sustainable and responsible manner, nuclear power can be an excellent substitute for coal for electricity generation- it produces far more energy than coal. Children also got a glimpse into the history of popular products used today, such as plastic and the process behind it. The recycling aspect of plastic and how it is being used by industries today were also explained very well. For example, some companies are using this option to produce more eco-friendly clothes. Children excitedly explored various sections in the museum such as Aerodynamics, Space, Natural Resources. and how in each of these domains, scientists are working towards creating more sustainable options using critical problem-solving skills to address issues facing our world today. Lots of inquisitive questions were asked by the students, displaying a keen sense of interest in what they saw.
The tour gave a wonderful insight into the way science and technology are being used to sustain a greener planet. Children learnt about how science and technology can be used positively to help sustain our planet and how innovation and sustainability go hand in hand.
